When two teams face each other and one is clearly stronger, a simple bet on who will win can feel predictable. That’s where handicap betting comes in. It’s a way to level the playing field, making the matchup more exciting—both for fans and bettors. In this article, we’ll explain how handicap betting works, why sportsbooks use it, and how you can read and use handicap odds to your advantage.

What Is Handicap Betting?

In handicap betting, one team is given a virtual advantage or disadvantage before the game starts. Sportsbooks “add” or “subtract” points, goals, or runs from a team’s final score to make the odds more even.

For example, if the Kansas City Chiefs play a weaker team like the Chicago Bears, the sportsbook might give the Bears a +7 point handicap. That means the Bears start the game with a theoretical 7-point lead. If the Chiefs win 27–21, the adjusted score for betting purposes is 27–28, and a bet on the Bears +7 would win.

The goal is to make both sides of the bet appealing, even when one team is heavily favored.

Types of Handicap Betting

There are a few main types of handicap bets, and understanding the differences is key before placing a wager.

Point Spread (American Handicap)

This is the most common form of handicap betting in the U.S., especially in football and basketball. The sportsbook sets a “spread” that represents the expected margin of victory. You can bet on whether the favorite will win by more than the spread or whether the underdog will keep the game closer than that.

Example: If the Los Angeles Lakers are -6.5 against the New York Knicks, the Lakers must win by at least 7 points for your bet to win. If they win by 6 or fewer, or lose, the bet on the Lakers loses.

European Handicap

This version uses whole numbers and allows for three outcomes—home win, draw, or away win—after the handicap is applied. It’s more common in soccer markets.

Example: A bet on “Arsenal -1” means Arsenal must win by at least two goals for your bet to win. If they win by exactly one goal, the result is a draw in handicap terms.

Asian Handicap

Originating in Asia, this format removes the possibility of a draw, offering more nuanced options and sometimes partial refunds. It’s popular among experienced bettors because it allows for more flexibility and reduced risk.

Example: A bet on “Liverpool -0.5” is the same as betting on them to win outright. If they win, you win; if they draw or lose, you lose. More complex lines like “-0.25” or “+1.75” split your stake across two handicaps, softening potential losses or gains.

Why Sportsbooks Use Handicaps

Handicap betting helps sportsbooks balance the action on both sides of a game. When one team is a heavy favorite, a straight win bet would offer very low returns. By adding a handicap, sportsbooks can offer more attractive odds and encourage betting on both teams.

For bettors, this means more opportunities to find value in games that might otherwise seem one-sided. But it also requires understanding how the handicap affects the final outcome.

How to Read Handicap Odds

When you see a handicap bet listed, it might look like “Dallas Cowboys -3.5 at odds of -110.” This means the Cowboys must win by at least 4 points for your bet to pay out. If they win by 3 or fewer, or lose, your bet loses.

Conversely, betting on “opponent +3.5” means your bet wins if that team loses by 3 points or fewer, draws, or wins outright.

Handicap betting is about thinking in terms of margins and probabilities, not just who wins or loses.

Tips for Smarter Handicap Betting

  • Study team form and motivation. A strong team resting key players might struggle to cover a large spread.
  • Consider the game context. Playoff games or rivalry matchups can be tighter than expected, affecting the margin.
  • Compare lines across sportsbooks. Even a half-point difference in the spread can significantly impact long-term results.
  • Start simple. If you’re new, begin with whole-number handicaps like +1 or -1 before exploring Asian handicaps.

Handicap Betting Makes Sports More Engaging

Handicap betting isn’t just about chasing a payout—it’s about understanding the dynamics of competition. Watching a game with a handicap in play gives you a new perspective on performance and expectations. Even a lopsided matchup becomes exciting when you’re tracking whether the favorite can “cover the spread.”

For many sports fans, that blend of analysis, strategy, and suspense is what makes handicap betting one of the most fascinating ways to engage with the game.
